Lessons From My Father

Jun21

I've been very blessed to have a wonderful father (and mother).  So in honor of Father's Day, I thought I'd list the things my father has taught me. (I've narrowed it to ten things, but I could go on forever!)

He taught me:

1. That every woman needs the following tools in her home: hammer & nails, a pair of pliers, a Phillips screwdriver, a flat head screwdriver, a utility knife, and duct tape.

2. How to BBQ (with charcoal and not with some crappy gas grill).

3. How to change a flat tire, check the major fluids a vehicle needs to run on, and how to change a fuse in my truck. Also, when to fix it myself and when to call my mechanic (AKA Daddy).

4. How to balance my checkbook.

5. If a man cannot respect me and treat me like a lady, then I don't need him in my life. On the same token, if I cannot respect a man and treat him as such, he doesn't need me in his life.

6. Hearing the phrase "I'm disappointed in you" can cut me quicker and harder than anything.

7. That just because you don't want to do something doesn't mean you shouldn't do it anyway.

8. As important as your family is, sometimes you hurt each other. But a strong family will forgive and move forward. Together.

9. That it's not always about me.

10. Lastly, that he will always love me and be there for me. No matter what I do.

Happy Father's Day to all the wonderful fathers out there.
